Negative is Positive
Negative is Positive is playing at the Theater for the New City located at 155 West First Avenue. It runs one hour forty minutes with one intermission. The play closes on November 30, 2014.
The play was written by Christy Smith-Sloman. It was first presented on May 7, 2012 at a reading done at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater as part of a Professional Playwrights unit reading series.
Simone (Karen Eilbacher) is finishing her visit with her dentist Dr. E. Kelman (Fulton C. Hodges). He tells her he has a new way to test for HIV. She refuses but then agrees to have it done. It is a test he can do in his office. The result shows she is HIV positive.
All hell breaks loose when she returns home to Brooklyn. She confronts her husband David (Joshua Zirger) saying they were tested before their relationship got intimate. They were both fine. He claims he has not had sex with anyone except her.
They are having friends Brianna (Vivienne Jurado) and George (David M. Farrington) over to watch two new episodes of Mad Men before it premieres on TV. Simone makes them leave.
Simone is beyond control. She is sure she is dying. Simone is scared since she is black her rate of survival is dim. David is white. There is no reasoning with her.
The relationship between the two different couples is ruined. Were Simone and David feelings for each other true? What happens when things change? If you want to know you will have to see the show. It makes you think about relationships and how we interact with each other or do we?
This is a delightful, well written play.
The set is one of the best off off Broadway ones I have seen. It was done by Jonathan Collins.
Karen Eilbacher and Joshua Zirger do and outstanding job.
I loved to see this play move uptown to maybe St Luke’s or Playwrights Horizons. Look out Broadway here they come!
