Transfers

Transfers is playing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre located at 121 Christopher Street. It runs one hour forty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on May 13, 2018.

David DeSantos (Glenn Davis) it talking to his girlfriend on a cell phone outside a motel. It is snowing. Things get heated up and she hangs up. Back in his room is Clarence Matthews (Ato Blankson- Wood). He apologizes to him about the room problem. He said there was a mix up in booking more rooms so he and another student will stay in his room on cots. Clarence and Cristofer Rodriquez (Juan Castano) go to community college and qualify to go to a more prestigious college on a scholarship. David is there to coach on how to answer questions when they are interviewed so they get in.

Cristofer comes in boisterous and loud. Both students said they don’t know each other though they are from the same neighborhood in the South Bronx.

David orders food for them.

We learn more about each of the students. They knew each other from a distance when they were younger. Both grew up with no family structure.

Clarence loves to read and Cristofer does wrestling in school. That’s what keeps both of them going

Cristofer is interview by Rosie McNully (Samantha Soule). Their interest is sports. Clarence is interviewed by Geoffrey Dean ((Leon Addison Brown). Both love to read books. Geoffrey office has wall to wall books.

When it comes time to decide who of the entire candidate’s get the two openings they all agree on Cristofer. David tries to reason with them on Clarence. The reply he may be bright and knowable but his SAT and grades are bad. There are other students who deserve it more.

The story was interesting, but I felt no empathy for the characters.

The set changing was impressive, especially the snow falling.
