Red Hot Mama

Red Hot Mama: A Sophie Tucker Cabaret is playing at the SOHO Playhouse located at 15 Vandam Street. It runs sixty minutes with no intermission. It closes on January 1, 2017.

Sophie Tucker was born in Russia in January 13, 1887on route to the United States. Her family settled in Hartford, Connecticut and opened a restaurant. She was a singer, actress, comedian and radio personality. Sophie was married three times. Miss Tucker was known by her nickname, “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas”. She died on February 9, 1966.

Melanie Gall is Sophie Tucker in this one person show. If you don’t know anything about Miss Tucker you will now. Melanie intertwines Sophie’s life with her songs.

I did not realize how off color she was especially given the time period she performed in.

The stage is bare except for some spot lights. What more do you need? Melanie did a splendid job as Sophie Tucker.
