Girl From The North Country

Girl From The North Country is playing at the Public Theater located at 425 Lafayette Street. It runs two hours with one intermission. The musical closes on December 23, 2018.

It was nominated for two Laurence Olivier Awards and won for best Actress Shelia Atim.

The music is by Bob Dylan and Conor McPherson.

Mare Winningham was nominated for a Tony Award in 2014 for Casa Valentina.

Stephen Bogardus was nominated for a Tony Award in 1995 for Love! Valour! Compassion!

David Pittu was nominated for a Tony Award for Is He Dead? (2008) and Love Musik (2007).

Doctor Walker (Robert Joy) introduces the Laine’s. Nick Laine (Stephen Bogardus) has no money and is about to lose his home. In order to keep the house he takes in borders. He lives with his wife Elizabeth (Mare Winningham). She is not there mentally. Their son Gene (Colton Ryan) wants to be a writer. He has a drinking problem. Marianne (Kimber Sprawal) is their daughter. She takes care of things around the house. The Laine’s adopted her,she is African American. Marianne is four months pregnant and no daddy is around. Nick is trying to make match between Mr. Perry (Tom Nelis) a local shoe maker and Marianne . Mr. Perry is 70 and Marianne wants nothing to do with it.

Nick has four boarders. Mrs. Neilsen (Jeannette Bayardelle) will be coming into money once her lawyer straightens things out with her late husbands will. She tells Nick she will help him out. They are having an affair. She is African American. Mr. Burke (Mark Kusisch), his wife (Luba Mason) and their son Elias (Todd Almond) are the other borders. Elias is grown up but not mentally.

They take in two borders that are passing by. Joe Scott (Sydney James Harcourt) and Reverend Marlowe (Davis Pittu) are the ones. Mr. Burke says to Joe I know you. Are you a boxer? What have you been doing? He says he just got out of prisoner after three years for a crime he did not do. The Reverend is a bible salesman.

Act Two we are now into Thanksgiving. We learn more about the characters and what has happened to them as the play gets near the end.

Dr. Walker tells you about what happens to the Laine’s.

To tell you will spoil it.

They sing twenty Bob Dylan’s song. Like a Rolling Stone is best known.

There are seventeen people in the cast. They all do an outstanding performance.

This is a remarkable show to see. Interesting how the stock market still has an effect on people and the relationship of African American’s during that period of time.
