The place is Drew Prep School for Boys. It is made up of all African students.

Pharus Jonathan Young (Jeremy Pope) is the leader of a gospel choir in the high school. They are singing at the graduation class. Pharus is the leader. Bobby Marrow (J. Quinton Johnson) makes some gay remarks. Pharus pauses in the singing the song. The next day Headmaster Marrow (Chuck Connor) asks him why he stopped when he was told not to stop no matter what happens. He won’t rat on his fellow choir member especially the person was his nephew.

The scenes go back and forth between Pharus and his roommate Anthony Justin “AJ” James (John Clay lll). Other scenes are in the choir room and the locker room. The other choir members are Junior Davis (Nicholas L. Ashe) and David Heard (Caleb Eberhardt) Davis was Pharus roommate. His father is a minister and he wants to be one two.

Headmaster Marrow is continually making announcements over the loud speaker. Like call your parents.

Bobby is continuously picking on Pharus about being gay.

Headmaster Marrow hires a white teacher Mr. Pendleton (AustinPendleton) to teach the choir on how to apply themselves.

Pharus acts gay. When he was eleven he went to the barber shop with his friend. He makes comments how his friends hair should be cut. His friend makes a remake and calls him fag boy. The town where he lived kept calling him that. He grew up with that comment. Maybe he started believing what they said. Pharus wants to be a great choir singer.

There is an incident between Pharus and David in the locker room that has its consequences.

The story was interesting and powerful. However where I sat at times I couldn’t hear what they were saying. I had to ask other people what happened.

The choir songs and dancing were stunning.

Jeremy Pope, J. Quinton Johnson and Chuck Cooper were outstanding.
