tick tick BOOM

Tick, Tick…Boom! Is playing at the Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row located at 410 West 42nd Street. The musical runs one hour thirty five minutes with no intermission. The musical closes on December 18, 2016.

Johnathan Larson was the playwright. He also did the music, book, and lyrics. He died January 25, 1996. Johnathan won a Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Drama Desk Award in 1996 for Rent.

The first performance of this musical was off Broadway at the Second Stage in August 1990.

The place is New York City in 1990.

It’s dark and all we hear it tick, tick…BOOM! When the lights come up Johnathan (Nick Blaemire) is at the piano. He tells us not to worry that there is nothing wrong in the theatre. He is about to be 30 and time is running out for him to be a success in acting or doing other creative things in the industry.

His roommate Michael (George Salazar) and longtime friend have given up his dream of becoming an actor. He has gotten a job on Madison Avenue. Michael is moving out of their Soho apartment and moving to one that has a door man uptown. He even has money to get a car and tries to get Johnathan to get a job in the place where he works.

Susan (Lilli Cooper), Johnathan girlfriend wants to leave the city and live near water, like Cape Cod. She wants to have a family.

Johnathan is holding on by a string, he is a waiter and feels time is running out. His musical “Superbia” is be done at a reading and he hopes something will come of it.

It is slow in the beginning but builds up. The last song “Louder Than Words” brought tears to my eyes, it was so touching.

Lilli Cooper and George Salazar play several roles.

The band is on stage, there is a key board, drums and two guitars .

Johnathan Larson never got to see the acclaim he received for his musical “Rent”. The show is a tribute to a talented man taken from us to soon.

The cast does a touching job to make this incredible show. They all shine.
