Forbidden Broadway Alive & Kicking
Playing at the 47th Theatre located 304 West 47th Street. The play runs one hour forty five minutes. This is an open ended run.
After a three year hiatus the show returns. The original show opened on January 15, 1982 at the Paissons Super Club in New York City. It ran 2,332 performances. The last show was in the same theatre from September 17, 2008 to March 1, 2009. The show is written by the same original creator Gerald Alessandrini.
The show is a satire on current and past Broadway shows. In Act One Evita, Nice Work, Annie, Once, Mary Poppins, Follies, Into the Woods, Rock of ages, Anything Goes, Ghost and Newsies are made fun of. In Act Two The Lion King, Spiderman, Jersey Boys, Porgy and Bess, Book of Mormons, Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, Smash, Wicked and End of the Rainbow are poked at. No one is spared. Individuals are made fun of too, Katherine Zeta Jones, Mandy Pantinkin and Stephen Sondheim
The cast makes fun of the show and some of the cast. If I tell you would it would give away the fun of seeing the show.
The cast is remarkable. I especially liked Jenny Lee Stern when she did Evita, End of the Rainbow, Natalie Charle Ellis in Rock of Ages and Once. Scott Richard Foster was great in Rock of Ages and The Lion King, Marcus Stevens in Nice Work If You Can Get It. There is no bad performance. Each actor caught the essence and performance of the original cast member.
It helps if you have seen the shows because it has more meaning but it's not important you will still laugh. It was amazing how they made changes for the different shows. I wish I could have been back stage to see how they got every one into a new costume, make up, wig, facial hair and props. It was rapid one scene after another. WOW and congratulation to whoever was back stage doing it.
I'm not for comedies but this one I did like. I'm sure you will too
