Newsies

At the Nederlander Theatre at 206 West 41 St. The musical opened on March 29, 2012. It runs two hours thirty minutes with one intermission. It is an opened ended show.

Newsies the movie was produced twenty years ago by Disney. It starred Christian Bale, Robert Duvall and Ann Margaret. It grossed $2.8 million making it one of Disney's biggest bombs. This show out earned the movie in four weeks.

Harvey Fierstein wrote the book. He has won four Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play and Best Author of a Play in 1982 for "Torch Song Trilogy", Best Book of a Musical in 1983 for "La Cage Aux Folles" and Best Actor in a Musical in 2009 for "Hair Spray". He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for "Newsies".

Joe Calhoun directed the show. He won a Tony Honor of Excellence in theatre in 2004 for "Big River".

Christopher Gattelli is the choreographer. He won a Tony and Outer Critics Circle Award for "Newsies".

The musical is based on a newspaper strike in 1899. Paperboys across New York City organized a union to strike against publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst.

The show takes place in lower Manhattan, the summer of 1899.

Almost all of the newsies have no families. Except for Davey (Ben Frakhauer) and his little brother Les (Nicholas Lampiasi) whose father lost his job. They all sell papers to make a living.

Jack Kelly (Corey Cott) is the leader of the group that buys papers from Joseph Pulitzer (John Dossett) news paper called "New York World". He also watches out for Crutchie (Andrew Keenan-Bolger).

They each buy 100 copies of the paper for 50 cents. If they don't sell them it's there loss.

Pulitzer is losing money on his paper. He decides to get the money back by raising the price the newsies have to pay to 60 cents. The newsies decide to strike.

The only article written about the strike is by Katherine (Kara Lindsay). Who turns out to be Pulitzers daughter.

There is romance, suspense, comedy and more in this wonderful show.

The choreography is the best I've seen. The dance routine at the end of act one and the one done at the beginning of act two are well staged. They are so well done they will take your breath way. Christopher deserves his Tony Award.

Corey Cott does a great job in his first Broadway role. I see a future for him on Broadway

Kara Lindsay is out standing.

Nicholas Lampiasi keeps up withe the adults in the show. He holds his own without stealing the scene from the adults.

The show is worth seeing even if your not a Newsie fan.
