Hillary and Clinton

Hillary and Clinton is playing at the Golden Theatre located at 252 West 45th street. It runs one hour thirty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on July 21, 2019.

William Jefferson Clinton was the 42nd President of the United States from 1993-2001. Bill was also governor of Arkansas from 1983-1992. He married Hilary Diane Rodman in 1975. She was State Senator of New York of New York from 2001-2009 and 67th US Secretary of State from 2009-2013. Hillary ran for President of the United States in the 2016 election as the Democratic Party’s nominee. The first women nominated by a major party.

Joe Montello is the director. He won two Tony Awards for Assassins (2004) and Take Me Out (2003) and was nominated for six Tony Awards for Three Tall Women (2018), The Humans (2016), The Normal Heart (2011), Glengarry Glen Rose (2005), Love! Valour! Compassion! (1995) and Angels in America (1993).

Rita Ryack is the costume designer. She was nominated for two Tony Awards for Casa Valentina (2014) and My One and Only (1983).

Laurie Metcalf won two Tony Awards for Three Tall Women (2018) and A Doll’s House Part 2 (2017) and was nominated for two Tony Awards for Misery (2015) and The Other Place (2013).

John Lithgow won two Tony Awards for Sweet Smell of Success (2002) and The Changing Room (1973) and was nominated for four Tony Awards for The Columnist (2012), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005), M. Butterfly (1988) and Requiem for a Heavyweight (1985).

Hillary (Lauren Metcalf) is flipping a coin over and over till she gets tails. She comments there are several planets out there that have the United Stated and the planet she got is the one she is president.

It’s 2008 and she is campaigning in New Hampshire for the party nomination for president. Hillary is concerned she is losing. She is holding three local papers saying she is. Tossing them aside she is comforted by Mark (Zal Orth) her campaign manager. Mark has no answers on why she’s not winning. But he tells her not to ask her husband Bill for help. He feels he will bring negative response from the people. I she loses she will be out of money to continue.

When Mark leaves she calls Bill (John Lithgow) to come help her. They haven’t seen each other in months. He has been traveling to raise money for charities. She tells him since he was getting paid to do it she wants some money to continue her campaign. Hillary tells Bill she doesn’t want his help, just the money. He gives her pointers on what to do. Which she doesn’t want. When Mark comes into the room he is furious Bill is there. Barack (Peter Francis James) wants her to be his vice president. She is thinking of accepting his offer. Bill and Mark are trying to discourage her.

Hillary wins New Hampshire. However that’s because Bill went campaigning. She is furious.

Barack visits and tell he has withdrawn his offer. The money Bill contributed was from people that would cause a problem especially with the press.

It closes with her looking at the stars. She said the plants with the United States; one could have Bill as President, another with her being President and the last without her as President.

This is an interesting play. But it seems more like a television show not a play on Broadway. At times it was tedious. May be part of it was the dull set, a chair and small refrigerator.
