A Day by the Sea

A Day By The Sea is playing at the Beckett Theatre in Theatre Row. The theatre is located at 410 West 42nd Street. It runs two hours forty minutes with two intermissions. The play closes on October 28, 2016. This is a Mint Theatre Production.

Act one is in the garden of Laura Anson’s house in Dorset, in the morning of May 1950. Elinor Eddison (Kylie McVey) and her brother Toby (Athan Sporek) are playing on the porch.

David Anson (George Morfogen) is sitting on the porch. His caretaker Doctor Farley (Philip Goodwin ) is nowhere to be seen. When he does show up he is intoxicated. Miss Mathieson (Polly McKie) is the governess of the children. She tells him to be careful because the staff cleaned his room and found empty liquor bottles. They have reported him to Mrs. Anson.

Laura comes along (Jill Tanner) concerned about David. Her son Julian (Julian Eifer) comes along. He’s not happy being there. Julian is a diplomate in Paris and has not been home in twenty years. William Grayson (Curzon Dobell) is talking to him. He works for the family.

Francis Farrar (Katie Firth) is there with her two children. When her parents died Laura took her in and raised her. Laura was friends with Francis parents. Francis is a recent widow. The death of her husband caused a scandal.

Act two takes place at the beach near the house. We learn more about the characters. Humphrey Caldwell (Sean Gormley) is Julian boss and has something important he needs to tell him. He came to tell him in person.

Act three is the same day, an hour later on the porch. Francis is leaving, but not before she has a confutation with Julian. Things come to a peak with several of the characters.

What we learn about them and what happens you will have to see the show. I don’t want to spoil it for you.

This is a deep play. What was said about the character’s is one view. But it makes you think more about the characters and what was behind their behavior. If you like thinking plays you will enjoy this production.
