Sistas

At the St. Lukes Theatre located at 308 West 46th Street. The musical opened on September 23, 2011 and has an open run. The show runs one hour thirty minutes without an intermission.

The play is written by Dorthy Marcic. Dr Marcic is a professor at Columbia University and a former Fulbright Scholar. She has written fourteen books.

Three African American sisters Roberta (Jennifer Fouche), Gloria (Tracey Conyer Lee) and Simone (April Nixon) ninety two year grandmother has just died. They are in the attic of her house cleaning up. They have to decide what song to sing at her funeral. Simone's daughter Tamika (Lexi Rhoades) is also helping.

Items in the attic bring memories of their grandmother, their childhood and black history.

Heather (Amy Goldberger) comes to help, she is white and is married to their brother. There is some tension between Roberta and Heather.

An item they pick up will spark a song which relates to what they are thinking or doing. Each women has their own pain and issues which we find out as the story goes on.

Each performer voice out does the other but they come together in great harmony. Jennifer Fouche has a powerful voice that moves you. Lexi struts her you know what. In other words boy can she move.

The music is great. Before the show it puts you in the mood for the music ahead. The songs range from Billie Holiday to Alicia Keys.

Their performance of "Respect" and "I Will Survive" were just as good as the original artist.

This show is worth seeing not only for the story but for the great execution of some of the most outstanding songs of our times.

Sistas is one show I would love to see again and then I would like to see it on Broadway.
