Pretty Woman

Pretty Women The Musical is playing at the Nederlander Theatre located at 208 West 41th Street. It runs two hours thirty minutes with one intermission. The show is open ended.

Jerry Mitchell is the director and choreographer. He won two Tony Awards for La Cage aux Follies and Kinky Boots (2013) both for chorography. Jerry was nominated for six Tony Awards for Kinky Boots (2013 director), Legally Blonde (2007), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005), Never Gonna Dance (2004), Hairspray (2003) and The Full Monty (2001), all for chorography.

David Rockwell is the scenic Designer. He won a Tony Award for She Loves Me (2016) and was nominated for five Tony Awards for On the Twentieth Century( 2015), You Can’t Take It With You (2015), Lucky Guy (2014),Kinky Boots (2013) and Hairspray (2003).

Gregg Barnes is the costume designer. He won two Tony Awards for Follies (2011) and The Drowsy Chaperone (2006). Gregg was nominated for five Tony Awards for Tuck Everlasting (2016), Something Rotten (2015), Kinky Boots (2013), Legally Blonde (2007) and Flower Drum Song (2003).

Andy Karl was nominated for three Tony Awards for Groundhog Day (2017), On the Twentieth Century (2015) and Rocky (2014).

Orfeh was nominated for a Tony Award in 2007 for Legally Blonde.

The setting is Hollywood “Once Upon a Time in the 1980’s”.

Happy Man (Eric Anderson) is singing welcome to Hollywood.

Vivian Ward (Samantha Barks) is escaping her apartment via the fire escape. Her landlord is threating her for not paying her rent. She lives on Hollywood Boulevard. It is loaded with hookers, which she is. She meets her roommate Kit DeLuca (Orfeh) and asks her what she did with the rent money?

Meanwhile in another part of town Edward Lewis (Andy Karl) is meeting with his lawyer Phillip Stockey (Matthew Stocke). They are about to take over a company owned by James Morse (Ezra Knight). Phillip gives Edward the keys to his car so he can get to his hotel. Edwards gets lost and stops for directions. Vivian tells him how to get there. Edward is still confused since he’s not sure how to drive the car. She strikes up a deal with him, she’ll drive him there and for an extra $100 she will give him an hour of pleasure. He agrees.

The hotel manager Mr. Thompson is not so happy seeing her in his high class hotel.

Edward asks her to stay the six days he will be in Hollywood. They agree on $3,000. When he leaves he gives her his credit card to go get presentable clothes that are appreciate for his statue. She goes to Rodeo Drive. The sales help won’t sell her since she’s dressed as a hooker. Edward goes with her, it a different story. Of course they will sell to him. For six day he takes her to different events as his girlfriend.

At the end of the six days he is smitten with her. He wants to take her back to New York with him.

To tell you what happens will spoil the show.

It’s an enjoyable musical. If you take it as it is. If you start thinking about it you may wonder would he have been smitten with her given his social standing and wealth.

Enjoy, it’s a good show.

Eric Anderson blew me away. He does several roles and shines in all of them. Samantha Barks, Andy Karl and Orfeh are outstanding. Their singing was breathtaking.
