Hamilton

Hamilton is playing at the Richard Rogers Theatre located at 226 West 46th Street. It runs two hours forty five minutes with one intermission. The show is open ended.

The story was inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

It premiered at The Public Theatre on January 20, 2015. The musical won several Off Broadway awards, including a Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award and Outer Circle Critics Award. That is just some of the awards it won.

The show opened on Broadway on July 13, 2015. It was nominated for thirteen 2016 Tony Awards and won eleven. It won for Best Musical, Book of a Musical, Original Score (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Best Actor(Leslie Odon Jr.), Feature Actor and Actress (Daveed Diaas and Renee Elise Goldsberry), Costume Design (Paul Tazell), Lighting Design (Howell Binkley), Direction (Thomas Kail), Choreography (Andy Blankenbuehlor) and Orchestration (Alex Lacaoire). It was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Feature Actors and Actress (Jonathan Groff , Christopher Jackson and Phillipa Soo).

It won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater album.

Thomas Kail is the director. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2008 for In the Heights and won a Tony Award in 2016 for Hamilton.

Andy Blankenbuehler is the choreographer. He won two Tony awards for In the Heights (2008) and Hamilton (2016).

David Korins is the set designer. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Hamilton (2016) and a Drama Desk Award for Lombardi (2010).

Paul Tazewell is the costume designer. He won a Tony Award for Hamilton (2016) and was nominated for five others Tony Awards.

Christopher Jackson won a Drama Desk Award in 2007 for In the Heights. He won two Daytime Emmy Awards in 2011 and 2014 for outstanding original song for the children series Sesame Street. Christopher was nominated for a Tony Award in 2016 for Hamilton.

Lin-Manuel Miranda won a Pulitzer Prize, two Grammys and three Tony Awards and was nominated for Best Actor in 2016 for Hamilton. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2013 for best musical for Bring It On The musical. Lin-Miranda won a Tony Award in 2007 for Best Original Score and Best Musical for In the Heights.

Rory O’Malley was nominated for a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Hamilton in 2016.

Javier Munoz took over the Hamilton role on July 10, 2016.

Brandon Victor Dixon took over the role of Aaron Burr on August 23, 2106. He was nominated for two Tony Awards for Shuffle Along (2016) and The Color Purple (2005). Brandon was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Motown (2013). He was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2015 for The Scottsboro Boys.

Renee Elise Goldsberry was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2006 for One Life to Live. She won a Drama Desk Award (2015) and a Tony Award (2016) for Hamilton.

The musical is about the life of Alexander Hamilton.

We learn a little about the American Revolution against England. Some of the people involved were George Washington (Christopher Jackson), Alexander Hamilton (Michael Luwoye), Aaron Burr (Brandon Victor Dixon), Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson (Jevon McFerrin). In the first act we meet his future wife Eliza (Lexi Lawson) and her sisters Angelica (Renee Elise Goldsberry) and Peggy (Jasmine Cephas Jones). Hamilton has an eye on Angelica.

The second act revolves on what happens to the United States after the revolution and the people involved.

Hamilton has a brief affair with Marion Reynolds (Jasmine Cepha Jones). Her husband James (Sydney James Harcourt) blackmails him about not revealing the affair.

Both Alexander and his son Phillip (Thayne Jasperson) are involved in a duel with the same pistols. Phillips was in 1802 and was killed. Alexander Hamilton duel with Aaron Burr was in 1804 and ended with Hamilton dying.

What happens in between you will have to see the musical.

For Americans is a nice reminder of how we started as a country. The younger generation it makes it more interesting to see it live. To those visiting the United States is a good history lesson.

In any case it makes you want to learn more about our founding fathers.

Christopher Jackson and Michael Luwoye do outstanding jobs. Their singing was remarkable.

Brandon Victor Dixon as Aaron Burr was amazing. I have seen him in several shows, but this is by far is the best role he has done. One solo song his singing reach the depth of his soul, it was breathtaking.

Rory O’Malley plays King George in four scenes. He is funny and sings beautifully. It was a delight to see him on stage.

The whole cast does an impressive job. Several do more than one role.

Andy Blankenbuehler does a great job on the choreography.

This show you could see several times and not get bored. That is if you can get a ticket. The drawback is if you get a ticket the actor you want to see may no longer be in the show. But whoever you see it doesn’t matter because they all do a great job in this exceptional musical.
