What the Constitution Means to Me

What The Constitution Means to Me is playing at the Helen Hayes Theatre located at 240 West 44th Street. It runs One hour thirty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on June 9, 2019.

Heidi Schreck is both the playwright and actress for this play.

Michael Krass is the costume designer. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2016 for Noises Off.

Heidi comes out on stage casualty and tells us she traveled around Washington debating the constitution of the United States at the American Legion Halls. It was done in front of an audience. That is how she got money to go to college. She told us she is from Wenatchee, Washington.

When she goes further into the stage she is in an American Legion hall.

Mike Iveson gives her the topic and how much time she has to make her point.

As it goes on it’s more about her life and the rights of women that affected her grandmother and her.

Her grandmother had three children with her first husband. He was killed in an accident. She remarried and had three more children with her second husband. The second husband beat her and raped her oldest daughter. She had two children with him.

Things happened to Heidi which due to new amendments and laws she could take care of them.

Heidi has a debate with Rosdely Ciprian who is young and African American. Her view is to do away with the constitution and make a new one. They debate about it.

Toward the end they give everyone a book from the American Civil Liberties Union which has The Constitution of the United States, the ACLU Today and Know Your Rights.

Heidi and Rosdely sit back to back and ask each other questions from the audience from the night before. The last question is asked to Rosedly and it is want to do in ten years.

This is a clever, witty play. It is a great reminder of the liberties we have that she should be for everyone no matter whom and what you are.

Heidi did an incredible job.

This is a must see play.
