The Prom

The Prom is playing at the Longacre Theatre at 220 West 48th Street. It runs two hours fifteen minutes with one intermission. The musical is open ended.

The musical premiere at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. It ran from August 10, 2016 - September 25, 2016.

Casey Nicholaw is the director and choreographer. He won one Tony Award for The Book of Mormon (2011) and was nominated for six Tony Awards for Mean Girls (2018), Something Rotten (2015), Aladdin (2014), The Book of Mormon (2011 choreography), The Drowsy Chaperone (2006), Spamalot ( 2005).

Scott Pask is the scenic designer. He won three Tony Awards for Mean Girls (2018), The Coast of Utopia (Parts 1, 2, 3) ( 2007), The Pillowman (2005) and was nominated for four Tony Awards for Mean Girls;The Bands Visit (2011), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (2008) and Pal Joey 2009).

Brooks Ashmanskas was nominated for a Tony Award in 2007 for Martin Short, Fame Became Me .

Beth Leavel won a Tony Award for The Drowsy Chaperone (2006) and was nominated for a Tony Award for Baby It’s You (2011).

Christopher Sieber won a Tony Award for Shriek The Musical (2009) and was nominated for a Tony Award for Spamalot (2005).

The place is New York City and Edgewater, Indiana.

Dee Dee Allen (Beth Leaval) and Barry Glickman (Brooks Ashmanskas) are in a restaurant having a party. They are waiting for the reviews for the play they were in. Dee Dee played Eleanor Roosevelt. When the reviews start coming in Sheldon Saperstein (Josh Lamos) reads them out loud. When he reads the times review, the play closes the same day it opened. Everyone leaves the party. Barry asks the waiter Trent Oliver (Christopher Sieer) if he knows him. He replies I’m between shows.

Unable to get work Angie (Angie Schworer), Dee Dee, Sheldon and Trent decide to find an event that they can help someone to get publicity for themselves. On line they find a senior in Indiana, Emma (Caitlin Kinnnuen) is not being allowed to attend the senior prom. They won’t let her come because she is gay.

They decide to go to Indiana to help her.

When they get there the PTA is having a meeting lead by Mrs. Greene (Courtenay Kinnunen). They decided to cancel the prom. Dee Dee visits the principal. Mr. Hawkins (Michael Potts) tells her he hope the state will do something. He recognizes Dee Dee and tells her he admires her acting.

The state says they can’t discriminate against Emmaher because she is gay. The prom has to go on. When she goes to the prom no one is there. It’s being held outside the school. No one told her.

Emma came out when she was 16. Her family threw her out. She lives with her grandmother. Alyssa (Isabelle McCalla) Emma friend is afraid to tell her mother (Mrs. Green). They breakup because of this.

The group tries to get publicity on what happened. Emma says she will do something. She puts a song she wrote about it on the internet. Emma gets over 3 million viewers.

What happens, well I’m not spoiling it for you!

The costumes by Ann Roth and choreography by Casey Nicholaw were breath taking.

The whole cast does remarkable performance. Brooks Ashmanskas, Beth Leavel and Christopher Sieber are outstanding. Angie Schworer does a takeoff of a scene from Chicago. She shines.

This must see show, it’s funny and enjoyable.
