The Cher Show

The Cher Show is playing at the Neil Simon Theatre located at 250 West 52nd Street. It runs two hours twenty minutes with one intermission. It is an open ended run.

It premiered in June 2018 at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago.

Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946. She married Sonny Bono in 1969 and divorced in 1975. She married Greg Allman in 1975 and divorced in 1979. Cher has two children Chaz Bono and Elijan Blue Allman.

Jason Moore is the director. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2002 for Ave Q.

Bob Mackie is the costume designer.

Christine Hones is the set designer. She won a Tony Award for American Idiot in 2010 and was nominated for a Tony in 2007 for Spring Awakening.

Christopher Gattelli is the choreographer. He won a Tony Award for Newsies (2012) and was nominated for four Tony Awards for My Fair Lady (2018), SpongeBob SquarePants (2017), The King & I (2015) and South Pacific (2008)

Jarrod Spector was nominated for a Tony Award in 2014 for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Stephanie J. Block was nominated for two Tony Awards for Falsettos (2017) and The Mystery of Edward Drood (2013).

Michael Berresse was nominated for a Tony Award for Kiss Me Kate and an Olivier Award.

Emily Skinner was nominated for a Tony Award for Side Show in 1997.

Star (Stephanie J. Block) opens the show with an almost revealing outfit. Babe (Micaela Diamond) is young Cher and middle age Cher is Lady (Teal Wicks).You will see them together at different times.

Babe tells her mother Georgia Holt (Emily Skimmer) that the kids in school are making fun of her. Her mother’s reply is to be you. Babe decides she wants to sing and quits school despite the fact she is 16. Babe meets Sonny Bone (Jarrod Spector). He is 12 years older than her. They become backup singers for several artists. When they decide to form their own group nothing happens until they go to England. Coming back to the state they are a successful for a couple of years. Spending all the money they have earned, their fame is at a low. Sonny decides they should go to Los Vegas, singing and doing comedy. The show is a success. Along the way they have a daughter and get married.

The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour on CBS first episode was August 1, 1971 and ended May 29, 1974. Bob Mackie (Michael Berresse) designed her daring clothe. When she found out Sonny was getting 95% of the earrings and their lawyer got 5%. Cher decides to leave him since he was getting all the money they earned.

Star went on to have her own show which premiered on February 16, 1975. Greg Allman (Matthew Hydzik) was one of her guests. They were married for three years and had a son.

She made her Broadway debut in Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. This was her only time on Broadway. She did several films, winning an Academy Award in 1987 for Moonstruck.

We go thru the ups and down in her career after doing several movies. To tell would only spoil it.

Stephane J. Block sounds so much like Cher. She does an amazing performance. Teal Wicks and Micaela Diamond are outstanding. The rest of the cast and ensemble are awesome.

Bob Mackie costumes were breathtaking.

Her songs are used to tell the story.

This is a must see musical.

If you are a fan of Cher you’ll love it, if not you will be.
