Lonesome Blues

Lonesome Blues is playing at the York Theatre located at 619 Lexington Ave. It runs one hour twenty minutes with no intermission. The musical closes July 1, 2018.

Lemon Jefferson was born in 1892 and died in 1929. He was the most popular blues singer of the 1920’s. Lemon was called the father of the Texas blues. He made over 80 records.

The time is Chicago 1929.

Lemon (Akin Babatunde) is at the train station in Chicago. He is blind and can’t see if anyone is round. Lemon keeps calling out for anybody to help him. It’s the dead of winter.

Lemon tells us bits and pieces of his life. We are introduced to some of the people in his life. He then sings songs he is known for. Lemon was born blind, sang in front of stores to earn money and recorded records in Chicago. This is some of the things we learn about him.

As the musical is near the end we wonder why no one is coming to is aid and if he dies where he is?

Akin Babatunde does a remarkable job doing both the musician and the people in his life.

David Weiss play a mean guitar.

This is a musical you will enjoy.
